VANCOUVER — Record July sales in Metro Vancouver and Victoria helped lift British Columbia's real estate market into balanced conditions between buyers and sellers across the province, the B.C. Real Estate Association reported Friday, compared with last summer's slide into buyer's territory.

Property sales in Canada this year are expected to drop back to 2000 levels before rebounding in 2010, according to a new report from the Canadian Real Estate Association.
The Ottawa-based group, which represents 100 boards across the country, issued a new forecast for 2009 and predicted sales would fall to 360,900. That would be a 16.9% decline from 2008. Sales last year fell 17.1% from 2007.
'We are caught in a cycle where consumer confidence has been eroded because of job losses and consumer confidence is an essential ingredient for housing sales activity,' said Calvin Lindberg, president of CREA.

Property sales in Canada are plunging amid fears that the credit crunch is affecting the country much harder than experts were expecting.
A shock 35% decrease in sales in Toronto in the last 12 months is the biggest year on year decline in recent memory, according to the Toronto Real Estate Board.
'People are coming in but not buying. When you ask them why they're not buying, they say that they are waiting for prices to drop further,' said Century 21 estate agent Charles Wang.

Shipping containers could be the answer for housing poor factory workers.

There are approximately 250 million shipping containers world wide. At any one time, up to 5% of that figure are actually not being used, sitting idle at docks. What if those empty containers could be converted into temporary housing for disaster victims, or even for people in transition?
